The 2000 year saw the return of twice a week garbage collections. We have heard many favorable comments from residents about the new collection schedule and especially the ability to dispose of heavy trash and bulky items every week. The convenience of not having to hold these items for a month is a major advantage under the new schedule. Residents having large quantities of heavy trash can take advantage of our overnight truck program.
While there had been some concern that there would be a decline in the Borough's recycling efforts, this did not prove to be the case as recycling tonnage continued at the 1999 levels. There has been a slight increase in the overall solid waste tonnage which we attribute to the healthier economy in the earlier part of the year and replacement of durable goods.
While the recycling program has been an ongoing success with over 40% of the total waste stream diverted from the landfills at an annual savings of $300,000, there are some residents who are not partners in this effort. Every resident is asked to make this small extra effort to keep recyclables out of the garbage can and into the recycling bin. Recycling protects the environment, conserves energy and saves tax dollars.
