Rutherford Borough Officials are reporting that as of September 24, 2002, five crows along with one mosquito pool have tested positive for the West Nile Virus. A total of nine dead crows have been reported in Rutherford since June 19, 2002.

While only four (4) New Jersey residents have been diagnosed with West Nile Virus as of this date, it is important for all property owners to eliminate all sources of standing water that can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, such as old tires, cans, and blocked gutters and to properly maintain swimming pools and change water in birdbaths weekly. Standing water allows for the breeding of mosquitoes, with the mosquito being the mode of transmission of the West Nile Virus to humans.

Residents can reduce their risk of being exposed to the West Nile Virus by applying insect repellent to their clothing and exposed skin in accordance with labeling directions, wear long sleeved shirts and pants outdoors, and limit outdoor activities at dawn, dusk and during the evening.

Additional information on the West Nile Virus is available on the State of New Jersey West Nile Virus Alert and Fact Sheet Web Site - http://www.state.nj.us/health/cd/westnile/enceph.htm and the Bergen County Department of Health Services Web Site - http://www.bergenhealth.org/healthtopics/westniletop.html

Residents with specific questions can contact the Rutherford Health Department weekdays between 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM at 201-460-3020 for assistance. Concerns about the Borough's West Nile Virus Surveillance Program can be addressed to Councilman Michael Matthews, Health Department Liaison at 201-460-3000 Extension 3164.

The Borough has also set up a 24-Hour West Nile Virus hot line number that can be accessed at 201-460-3014. Additional information is also available on the Borough Web Site at www.rutherford-nj.com
