The Collector of Taxes is responsible for the collection and billing of taxes only.

The Borough of Rutherford Tax Collector’s Office is pleased to announce our "E-Minder". If you are responsible for the payment of your property taxes and would like an e-mail reminder approximately one week prior to the due date please provide us with your e-mail address. We will also notify you when the new tax bills are mailed. Avoid interest charges and sign up now.

 2nd quarter property taxes due May 1, 2008. The 10 day grace period is extended to Monday, May 12, 2008.


Quarterly Tax Payments Become Due:

August 1, 2007November 1, 2007February 1, 2008May 1, 2008

There is a grace period to the tenth day of each quarter.

Enclose a self addressed stamped envelope if you wish a receipt.

Delinquencies

The tax payment must be in the collector's office by the 10th of the month, or interest will be retroactive back to the 1st. If payment is made after grace period, please contact the tax office for the correct amount of interest penalties due.


It is the property owners responsibility to maintain records regarding the payment of property taxes. Receipted tax bills or cancelled checks are proof of payment.

Tax bills will not be issued when property ownership is transferred. It is the responsibility of the property owner to be aware of tax payment amounts and due date. Individuals transferring property are requested to turn over tax information to the new owner at time of title transfer.

Property tax Deductions

Eligible Veterans, Senior Citizens (individuals 65 years of age or older), and totally disabled individuals can receive a $250 property tax deduction, if qualified. Individuals interested in obtaining this deduction are required to complete an application to determine eligibility. Applications are available at the Tax Office.

Senior Citizens (65 years of age or older), and totally disabled persons are entitled to the deduction of $250.00 from their property taxes if their income does not exceed $10,000.00 annually, excluding Social Security, and they meet certain qualifications.

REMINDER:

If you are receiving a Senior Citizen or disabled individual property tax deduction, post annual tax statements will be mailed to you. The completed statements must be returned by March 1st or you will lose the deduction.
