The Rutherford Police Department provides a wide range of emergency and protective services by a professionally trained staff of officers. With a complement of 35 members, the department serves a resident population of 18,000 and a daytime population of 25,000 while patrolling 40 miles of road and portions of 2 state highways.

The Department responds to approximately 13,500 calls per year and conducts criminal investigations through its detective bureau. Since 1995, the department has adopted an aggressive community policing philosophy which integrates citizen involvement to strengthen the operations of the department. In addition, members of the department work closely with school children in the D.A.R.E. Program, Adopt-A-Cop and youth sports activities. Despite its proximity to several large cities, the Borough enjoys a low crime rate and is considered a safe suburban community for raising families.
