Letter from the Police Director
It is my honor and privilege to serve you as the Police Director of the Rutherford Police Department. I welcome this opportunity and I look forward to working with each of you. With this partnership I know we can reduce crime here in Rutherford and improve upon our quality of life.
In 1995 the Rutherford Police Department first introduced the philosophy of community policing to all department members and to all segments of the community. To this day we emphasize a department wide approach to community policing which allows for all department members to get involved with the community.
The Police Department is responsible for the protection of life and the prevention of crime and disorder.
Our primary activities include the enforcement of our Borough Code, the laws of the State of New Jersey, the investigation of crimes, the apprehension of violators, enforcement of traffic laws, reduction of traffic accidents, and the promotion of crime prevention. When a community and their police department work together, they are a force to be dealt with against those whose intentions are less then admirable.
The Department works with the school district by providing a Schools Resource Officer to act a liaison and mentor to the district school children. We will continue to maintain a close working relationship with other law enforcement agencies throughout the sate, county and neighboring communities.
I thank you for visiting the Rutherford Police Department’s web page. I welcome all comments and suggestions from our residents and visitors as well. It is with your input that we can reach the goals and objectives of our mission statement.
I realize that we can continue to improve on our mission by listening to and working with our citizens. With this in mind, please feel free to stop by and introduce yourself to me and visit our Police Headquarters. I can be contacted directly at 201-460-3054. I can also be reached via email at jthompson@rpd.com
