Rutherford Fire Department
Application Instructions



  1. The application for membership has been developed by the members of the Rutherford Fire Department. It is the intent of this document to provide the necessary information to review and process applications for membership.

  2. Any person interested in becoming a member of the Rutherford Fire Department must complete the Fire Department application Form #1 and the RFD Waiver Form #2. Note: All applicants must complete the NJSFA Standard Application Form along with the Civil Defense Application.

  3. RFD Form #1 and Waiver Form #2 can be obtained at the Rutherford Borough Clerk's Office. Upon completion of all forms applicant will return forms to the Borough Clerk's Office.
    1. Forms #1 and #2 will be placed in the Fire Department Chief's mailbox.
    2. Form #2 requires a witness signature.

  4. RFD - Waiver Form #2 was designed solely for the purpose of applicant to waive his rights, giving the RFD permission to complete criminal and driver's license background checks.
    1. Form #2 will be signed, then forwarded to the Rutherford Police Department for processing.
    2. Police Department will return form to Fire Chief upon completion. Police Department must sign Form #2.
    3. Form #2 will be reviewed by Fire Chief and Borough Attorney (if necessary).
    4. No applicant will be placed on Auxiliary status until Form #2 has been returned from Police Department.
    5. Any applicant who refuses to sign RFD - Waiver Form #2 will result in application not being processed.

  5. RFD Form #1 will be forwarded by the Fire Chief to the specific company applicant has applied for. Upon completion of background investigations by fire company, RFD Form #1 and Form #2 will be forwarded to Fire Headquarters for filing purposes.

  6. All applicants will be fingerprinted and photographed.
