SAFETY TIPS FOR A HURRICANE WATCH
The Office of Emergency Management recommends that persons in hurricane watch areas become familiar with what to do during a hurricane watch and plan ahead to reduce the chances of injury or major property damage. A hurricane watch is issued when there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24 to 36 hours.
The following are tips to help people prepare and respond appropriately in the event of a hurricane watch:
- Listen to a battery-operated radio or television for hurricane progress reports.
- Prepare a hurricane evacuation kit to include: First Aid kit Bottled water, food and medications
- Make sure to have enough food, water, and medications for at least 3 days
- Have a hard line phone ready for use (portables may not work)
- Fuel car.
- Make sure to have cash on hand (ATM may be down)
- Bring in outdoor objects such as lawn furniture, toys and garden tools, anchor objects that cannot be brought inside and remove outside antennas.
- Have pet carriers ready in case of evacuation
- Turn refrigerator and freezer to coldest setting. Open only when absolutely necessary and close quickly.
- Important documents (valid ID, insurance info & money)
- If ordered to evacuate - obey immediately. Turn off gas, water, and electricity, and unplug small appliances.
- Inform family or friends outside of the warning area of your evacuation plans.
Remember to help neighbors who may require special assistance (infants, senior citizens, and people with disabilities).
