| RUTHERFORD - Borough officials have announced that a test of the Station Square modern roundabout will start in August.
"Over the past several years the Borough and Bergen County investigated various alternative configurations of Station Square to improve pedestrian mobility to and from the railroad station. As the result of a study funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation the modern roundabout design emerged as the preferred alternative," Mayor Bernadette P. McPherson stated.
"While the traffic circle and ability to reverse directions will remain with the roundabout, traffic will be channelized on the approaches to reduce speeds. Vehicles within the roundabout will have the right of way and vehicles entering will have to yield before entering," Councilmember Bruce Bartlett, Police Department liaison added.
"Since we want to see how the new design functions before planning final improvements, a test of the layout using lane delineators will be setup in August and monitored over several weeks. We anticipate some initial motorist confusion until drivers adjust to the changes and police officers will continue to be stationed in the Square during rush hour periods," Councilmember Bartlett continued.
"New Jersey Transit is projecting that our train ridership will be increasing in 2002 to approximately 1200 passengers a day when the Secaucus Transfer Facility opens. This will add to the importance of creating a safer pedestrian environment in Station Square. With lower vehicle speeds and shorter distances for pedestrians to cross the modern roundabout design will help us achieve this goal," Mayor Mc Pherson concluded.
