| RUTHERFORD - Officials from the Borough and Linque-H.C. Partners held a ground breaking ceremony for the new Department of Public Works garage facility on October 22nd.
“The new site is located between Highland Cross and Borough Street east of Route 17. The 18,400 square foot building will be located on a 3.5 acre site at the northerly end of the Highland Cross redevelopment project. The building has been designed to house the DPW fleet vehicles many of which presently are stored outside due to inadequate space in the existing garage,” Mayor Bernadette P. McPherson announced.
“This facility is long overdue and its construction was one of my top priorities upon taking office. As the result of tough but amicable negotiations with the developer, Linque will fund approximately 25% of the project costs. The new facility will be state of the art and be designed to architecturally blend into the overall project which will also include a Marriott Hotel, two office towers and parking structures,” Mayor McPherson continued.
“The DPW employees are very excited about the project and are looking forward to the move. The existing building on Agnew Place is substandard and limits their operations severely,” Councilmember George Fecanin, DPW liaison, added.
“With site work scheduled to begin in November, we anticipate occupancy of the building in mid-2002. In addition to the garage facility, the project will includes a salt barn which will hold 400 tons of rock salt for the winter season and a fuel depot to service all of the Borough and Board of Education ~ Mayor McPherson stated.
“We are all looking forward to the completion of the project next year, and I want to express our thanks to members of the developer's team for the cooperative manner in which they worked with us to make this dream a reality,” the Mayor concluded.
